I am so excited to announce that I will be assistant directing the off-Broadway premiere of James McManus’s CHERRY SMOKE, directed by Tamilla Woodard. Over the past week, we’ve visited the venue (Urban Stages), and I’ve been a part of Skype conversations with designers and actors spread all over the globe – LA, Houston, St. Louis, and Tokyo. I’ve also been diving into some dramaturgical research and exploring the Monongahela Valley in southwest Pennsylvania – what it looks like, what the demise of the steel mills in the late 1970s-early 1980s did to its towns, and what happened to the people as a result. Other topics of interest: unsanctioned, bare-knuckle fighting, homeless teenagers, and the dialect that’s very specific to a town 20 miles south of Pittsburgh and 20 miles north of West Virginia.

Rehearsals begin on March 25th, and I can’t wait to have the entire cast and creative team together to begin to realize this beautiful play. I’m really happy how hands-on this assistant directing position feels already!
